LPC ANNOUNCEMENT

Reporter Independence

I had a situation with a fellow where we set up listening sessions for them. The participants were eager to see themselves in the reporting, and some wanted to be sources. The reporter ended up going in a completely different direction, and the final piece wasn’t about this group/topic at all. As an advisee, how do you balance respecting the reporter’s independence with the desire to see engagement shape the journalism?
